The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These practices rest on important “processes and proficiencies” with longstanding importance in mathematics education. Standards for Mathematical Practice are not isolated skills or activities; instead they are the appropriate observable actions that students display.
The focus in this course will be on one or two mathematical practices each session. Each session will give ideas for best teaching practices and resources that can be applied immediately in a classroom. Participants will develop a learning progression that includes a selected standard.
This course will provide opportunities for participants to become familiar with the eight mathematical practices and examine instructional materials. It will require participants to actively reflect on their practice and examine the extent to which students are cognitively engaged.
